Water Filtration for Ice Machines

70% of service calls for Ice machines are water-related.

Good quality ice has a sparkle to it and when you serve a refreshing glass of ice water, you want it to look clean and crystal clear. Pentair Everpure® filtration solutions remove particulates that result in cloudy, “soft” ice, as well as reduce other contaminants causing off tastes and odours. In addition, our water treatment systems control scale buildup in ice making equipment to maintain peak operating efficiency and extend working life.

Filtration address challenges such as:
  • Hard water can lead to cloudy, misshapen ice and “mushy”, fast-melting ice.
  • High iron content can promote slime buildup inside machine and bin, which is not only unappealing but can also cause corrosion.
  • Scale buildup can cause reduced ice production, longer harvesting cycles or complete machine “freeze up”.
  • Dirt, sediment and scale can cause valves to stick which may result in continuously leaking water, bridging of cubes, or preventing ice production altogether.
  • Scale on the water-cooled condenser coil can increase water usage.
  • Metal corrosion due to chlorine and chlorides in water.
  • Mineral solids, dirt and sediment can be abrasive, causing premature component wear.

    Everpure 4CB5-S Features

The Everpure 4CB5-S features fine filtration for high quality ingredient water, and carbon that reduces chlorine as well as off tastes and odours. Chlorine destroys aromatics and oils, increasing a beverage’s acidity so it’s important to remove it. This filter also contains a scale inhibitor that reduces the build-up of scale that can cause increased maintenance costs. The 4CB5-S is suitable for low hardness areas and offers a higher capacity and life compared to compact version, 2CB5-S. This filter fits all Everpure heads and is quick change for each servicing. 4CB5-S is NSF Certified under NSF Standard 42.

Introducing the new 7SI Carbonless Ice Filter by Pentair®

A NEW WEAPON AGAINST ICE MACHINE SLIME

Everpure® 4SI

Under Counter Ice Machines

Everpure® 7SI

Free Standing Ice Machines

The 7SI Filter is ideal for foodservice operations that have had problems with slime and bacteria growth in their ice machines and ice bins. An example is locations that do baking or brewing on site where yeast can cause biofilm growth. The 7SI cartridge features Fibredyne™ media without carbon which allows chlorine to pass through while still providing scale protection and particulate reduction.

FEATURES

Ice Machine Protection: Integrated scale inhibition reduces scale damage that can increase service costs by causing “freeze-up” on the evaporator plate and in the bin, clogging of distribution lines, and disrupting of probes, pumps, solenoids, and valves.

Helps Reduce Slime: Allows chlorine to pass through to the ice machine, reducing the growth of bacteria leading to biofilm in the machine and bin.

Superior Dirt Holding Capabilities: Fibredyne media provides superior dirt holding down to 0.5-micron.

    • Does not contain carbon
    • Ideal for foodservice operations where baking of breads and pastries is done on-site
    • Allows chlorine and chloramines present in the influent municipal stream to pass through, helping to inhibit bacterial growth and slime in the ice machine and ice bin, reducing the risk of health inspection violations
    • Chlorine passes into the ice machine which facilitates compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188P in hospital and healthcare facilities
    • Reduces sediment and particulate down to 1/2-micron by mechanical means
    • Reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia by mechanical means
    • Scale inhibition protects your ice machine from scale damage that can increase energy and service costs, and cause equipment downtime

The Water Chemistry of Ice

Turbidity

Turbidity describes the particles in the water such as dirt, silt and sand. Dirt and sediment can cause valves to stick which may result in continuously leaking water, bridging of cubes, or preventing ice production altogether. It can also cause abrasion and premature component wear. It is recommended that water for ice does not exceed a level of 0.5 NTU turbidity. To achieve this, we recommend a filter rated at or below 5 microns.

Chlorine and Chloramine

Chlorine is corrosive to metals, especially copper tubing. Corrosion’s negative impacts on stainless steel includes pitting, crevice corrosion and even stress cracking. Good quality carbon filtration will usually be sufficient to remove Chlorine. For Chloramine, seek a high quality carbon filter this is rated for Chloramine removal. In some instances however, the removal of Chlorine causes excessive slime and bio film buildup. Sometimes the lesser of 2 evils is required and a filter that allows chlorine to pass through to the ice machine is required to reduce the growth of bacteria in the machine and bin.

In General, the Chlorine level for Ice equipment should be less than 0.05ppm.

Alkalinity

Alkalinity, or Carbonate hardness levels should be below 150ppm. Alkalinity above this level accelerates the formation of scale. An alkalinity lower than 150ppm however doesn’t assure you of a scale free machine; there are many more factors to consider in understanding scale formation, but scale can be reduced through treatment of Alkalinity with a blendable hydrogen resin based softener such as Everpure’s Claris Water Filter Series.

Hardness

The Total Hardness should be <85ppm. It is the hardness reacting with the carbonates (alkalinity) that creates scale in Ice Machines. Scale buildup can cause reduced ice production, longer harvesting cycles or complete machine “freeze up”. Scale on the water-cooled condenser coil can increase water usage.

A good quality scale inhibitor will usually deal with these issues, however if hardness is excessive and scale is still rapidly forming, consult Essential Services via our contact page for customised solutions.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

This is basically everything that is dissolved in the water (Hardness, Chloride etc.). Suggested levels for steam equipment is <100ppm. High levels of dissolved solids will drive scale or corrosion in your steam equipment depending on the characteristics of you water chemistry.

pH

Water with a pH lower than 7 is said to be acid and could, under extreme conditions, lead to corrosion of ice equipment. It is recommended that the pH be between 6.8 – 7.4.

Chlorides

Chlorides are common around Australia, predominantly in WA but are also commonly found in SA and Queensland. Chlorides are extremely corrosive, even stainless steel can be affected. Due to the myriad of metals used in modern ice machines, it is difficult to put an exact figure on a safe limit, but if the chloride levels exceed 30 ppm then ideally some action should be taken. Chlorides can only be effectively removed through Reverse Osmosis. Softening filters have no effect and often make the situation worse by removing the hardness which was partially balancing out the Chloride’s aggressiveness.
